The Advantages of LED Bulbs Compared to Other Types of Bulbs

Lighting technologies have evolved considerably in recent years. Concern about consumption, the economy and sustainability is the main cause of this. Faced with this reality, the advantages of LED bulbs become more and more evident.

The Advantages of LED Bulbs Compared to Other Types of Bulbs

To better understand the benefits of opting for this technology, how about knowing more about this type of lamp? Follow us!

WHY USE THE LED BULB?

The LED (Light Emitting Diode) is a semiconductor electronic device that, when energized, emits visible light. About 95% of the energy is transformed into light, and only the remaining 5% convert to heat.

This is the fundamental characteristic that makes it more economical than the mechanisms of incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lamps.

CONSUMPTION AND ECONOMY

To produce the same luminous intensity, the LED bulb consumes 80-90% less energy than the incandescent bulb – which is already banned in Brazil due to its low energy efficiency.

The incandescent bulb performs similarly compared to the halogen bulb – an evolution of the incandescent, which consumes about 30% less than it. Both have similar functioning: the heating, by the electric current, of a filament of tugstênio (contained in the bulb and surrounded by inert gas), generating light and heat.

The fluorescent lamp does not use this type of filament. Light is produced by the passage of electric current through a reactor, causing the ionization of argon atoms and mercury vapor inside the tube.

This technology difference allowed to reduce the dissipated heat in the environment and generate savings of up to 75% in consumption. Despite this improved performance, the LED lamp is considerably more economical, consuming up to 70% less energy.

If better performance is not enough, LED bulbs offer another relevant benefit: they do not change the ambient temperature because of the low heat emission. In this way, they do not cause thermal discomfort and a possible extra expense with the air conditioning.

LIGHT EFFICIENCY

The greater luminous efficiency of the LED lamp in relation to the others can be evidenced comparing the consumption in watts (W) to the amount of light emitted in lumens (lm) between them.

In this regard, a 7 W LED lamp, for example, emits a luminous flux of about 600 lm, similar to a 60W incandescent or halogen lamp and a 14W fluorescent lamp. That is, it consumes half of the fluorescent lamp and about 8 times less than the incandescent.

In addition, the LED lamp produces a stronger light than the others, which contributes to its greater efficiency. The other models still lose their intensity over time, compromising performance. This process also occurs with the LED, but the ratio is much lower.

IS IT WORTH INVESTING IN LED BULBS?

The advanced technology makes the cost of LED bulb a bit higher compared to other bulbs. However, with the demand for reduction in consumption by both the consumer and the government – according to the National Energy Efficiency Plan (PNEE) – there is a tendency for continued investment in this technology and, consequently, a decrease in prices.

This scenario is quite promising, as the advantages of LED bulbs are already perceived in the pocket: better energy performance and superior service life outweigh the initial investment.

DURABILITY AND COST

Fluorescent lamps cost, on average, half the value of LED bulbs. However, its durability is 20,000 hours, while LEDs can last up to 25,000 hours. This means that every 4 LED bulbs will gain the shelf life of 1 fluorescent lamp. In addition, the latter consumes, on average, double the LED bulb. In this way, there is also savings in the light bill.

Already the obsolete incandescent bulb is the cheapest of all and can cost 5 times less than the LED bulb. Although still found on the market, the production of this model is prohibited, since its performance is far below that stipulated by the PNEE. Thus, this initial advantage becomes an illusion. See why:

Supposing that in the energy bill of his residence the value of $ 100.00 was originated from the use of incandescent lamps. This amount would be reduced to R $ 20.00 replacing them with LED lamps. This calculation would already justify the adoption of the new technology.

However, the benefit extends to durability, since LED bulbs resist up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs.

Halogen lamps cost little more than incandescent lamps, but the advantage over LED lamps is limited to this, as they stand up to 5,000 hours – durability 5 times lower than that offered by LED bulbs.

WHAT ARE THE OTHER ADVANTAGES OF LED BULBS?

Although high performance is the main reason for acquiring LED lamps, some other qualities deserve attention. Check below:

SUSTAINABILITY

As previously stated, incandescent and halogen lamps have a filament of tugstene to produce light and fluorescents with mercury vapor, both elements toxic to the environment.

These substances are not found in the LED bulb. Therefore, even if the disposal is not done properly, it does not cause contamination of the soil. In addition, almost all of its components can be recycled. The lower consumption also reflects, positively, the economy of resources, as well as the reduced emission of heat.

COLORS

Unlike fluorescents – manufactured in cold white color – LED bulbs feature white (hot or cold), multitemperature, monochromatic color and RGB, which switches from a wide variety of colors.

DIVERSITY OF MODELS

Currently, it is possible to find practically all models of LED lamps: bulb, candle, tubular, dichroic, PAR, high power, AR and others that can be used in different luminaires. In addition, there are also LED tapes, a practical and versatile resource for the decoration of environments. Remembering that residential LED bulbs are between 4.5W and 10W.

The dimmer, which was an exclusive feature of incandescent and halogen lamps, can already be adopted in monochromatic LED lighting. The convenience to trigger and regulate the intensity of light via remote control is also already available in the market.

It is important to note that these advantages are only guaranteed by quality LED lamps. Therefore, avoid purchasing irregular products. The good news is that since 2017 the big retailers are forced to sell products with Inmetro’s certification seal and, from 2018, small traders were included in this requirement.

However, to ensure the advantages of LED bulbs, always shop in specialized stores with good references. As you discovered in the post, it’s worth investing in this technology!
